    Less, SSH, man and other programs stopped working after upgrading to kernel 2.6.x.
    I've just installed a clean Slackware 10.0 and compliled a brand new 2.6.10 kernel for it. Using it for 2 days I've encountered several problems:

    First of all, I couldn't read man pages. eg: [email protected]:~# man links
    Error executing formatting or display command.
    System command /bin/bzip2 -c -d /usr/man/cat1/links.1.bz2 | /usr/bin/less -is exited with status 256.
    [email protected]:~#

    Second I tried less:
    Nothing happens, just returns to the command prompt.

    And when I tried ssh: [email protected]:~# ssh [email protected]
    ssh_askpass: exec(/usr/libexec/ssh-askpass): No such file or directory
    ssh_askpass: exec(/usr/libexec/ssh-askpass): No such file or directory
    ssh_askpass: exec(/usr/libexec/ssh-askpass): No such file or directory
    ssh_askpass: exec(/usr/libexec/ssh-askpass): No such file or directory
    Permission denied, please try again.
    ssh_askpass: exec(/usr/libexec/ssh-askpass): No such file or directory
    Permission denied, please try again.
    ssh_askpass: exec(/usr/libexec/ssh-askpass): No such file or directory
    Permission denied (publickey,password,keyboard-interactive).
    [email protected]:~#

    After a bit of googling, I found the following solution on LinuxQuestions.org:

    Open the file: /etc/udev/rules.d/udev.rules and change the line
    KERNEL="tty[p-za-e][0-9a-f]*", NAME="tty/s%n", SYMLINK="%k"
    to:
    KERNEL="tty[p-za-e][0-9a-f]*", NAME="pty/s%n", SYMLINK="%k"
    now run /etc/rc.d/rc.udev it should give output like:
    Initializing udev dynamic device directory.

    All should be good now. :-).. Hey what's that, gnome-terminal and rxvt won't start... well, a good old reboot worked for me
