Se voce não tem /dev/sdax, plugue seu pen-drive e veja se este dispositivo é criado dinâmicamente. Caso contrário - mesmo depois do comando modprobe usb-storage e lsusb - voce poderá criá-lo com mknod. O major e minor estão nos docs do kernel/scsi.
É estranho. Tenho um FC3, com suporte a scsi (vejo pelo /lib/modules/$kernel_version/drivers/scsi) e também não há um device em /dev/sdxx.
