Como faço pra iniciar o gnome como estava antes?

Existe um arquivo chamado /etc/X11/XF86Config-4

Nele estão armazenadas as informações para subir o servidor X.

Ta vendo a linha:

Ela significa: pau no mouse! hehehe

Você pode tentar trocar o protocolo para auto, IMPS/2 (letra maiuscula) ou para qualquer outro que achar na net.
